Michael Brownrigg

Candidate for State Senate

Michael has 30 years of public service, including 12 years as a US Diplomat serving in the Middle East, China and Washington DC, and more recently 18 years in local government, including 8 years on Burlingame’s Planning Commission and 10 years on City Council, twice serving as Mayor. Mike was born and raised in Santa Clara County and is raising his own family in San Mateo County, the only candidate with deep family roots in both counties. He grew up in Los Altos Hills and attended Fremont Hills Elementary, Terman Middle School and Gunn High School.

In his time leading Burlingame, the City has improved infrastructure, added affordable housing, created a General Plan that envisions a 20% increase in housing units over 10 years, paid down inherited pension deficits while adding to rainy day funds, and added new parks and schools. Burlingame is widely described as one of the best run cities on the Peninsula.

Regionally, Mike serves on the board of HEART (Housing Endowment and Regional Trust (https://www.heartofsmc.org/) and also on the Advisory Board of Foundation for College Education, a non-profit that helps kids of color from East Palo Alto attend and graduate from a 4 year college program.

In his private life, Michael has used finance to grow businesses that are doing social good while earning a return for investors. The company he co-founded, TOTAL Impact Capital (http://totalimpactcapital.com), helped create an online health company for Latinos and other non-English speakers in California to generate better health outcomes (http://consejosano.com); helped grow MA’O, Hawai’i’s largest organic farm; and provided low cost loans to expand hospitals and clinics in Asia and Africa and clean water in El Salvador.
